Modelling flow-induced microstructural segregation in semi-solid metals

چکیده

Lightweight alloys produced by pressurized castings suffer from flow-induced microstructural segregation due to the migration of externally solidified crystals (ESCs). Although some qualitative research has been carried out on ESCs migration, quantitative prediction it is still demanded. In this respect, an model based hydrodynamics and rheological behaviour semi-solid metals (SSMs) proposed estimate segregation. By employing model, a plug flow region having decisive influence observed according simulation yield-pseudoplastic SSMs. Good agreement between experimental data results obtained, suggesting that such controllable manipulating process parameters as solid fraction, cavity size filling velocity. A real-time in situ synchrotron X-ray radiography experiment reveal nature provide evidence for hypothesized mechanism. semi-empirical fraction-related (SFR) capable relating with fraction SSMs also proposed, enabling optimization parameters.

Joining Metals Using Semi-Solid Slurries

A method of joining metals with semi-solid slurries is presented. Experiments have been carried out using a model alloy of Sn-Pb to demonstrate the concept. The advantages of this process are a controlled microstructure of the weld, lower post-welding stresses and a small heat affected zone. Tensile tests have been performed, showing a weld strength comparable to bulk material strength. Key fac...

Microstructural Evolution and Mechanical Properties of Type 304 L Stainless Steel Processed in Semi-Solid State

The paper discusses the effect of semi-solid processing on the microstructural evolution and mechanical property of 304L stainless steel. For the study, steel specimens were part ially melted and cooled to room temperatures in different cooling medium. The effect of temperature, t ime and cooling medium on microstructural evolution was studied by using optical microscopy. It was found that melt...

Solid electrolyte interphase in semi-solid flow batteries: a wolf in sheep's clothing.

The formation of the alkyl carbonate-derived solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) enables the use of active materials operating at very cathodic potentials in Li-ion batteries. However, the SEI in semi-solid flow batteries results in a hindered electron transfer between a fluid electrode and the current collector restricting the operating potentials to ca. 0.8 V vs. Li/Li(+) for EC-based electrol...

Modelling Social Segregation

This paper proposes a multilevel modelling approach to the analysis of social segregation in schools. Using data on free school meal eligibility it shows that the underlying variation between schools for the period 1994–1999 has increased. It also shows that the change is greater for selective than non-selective local education authorities (LEAs). It is suggested that the approach of this paper...

Sinuous flow in metals.

Annealed metals are surprisingly difficult to cut, involving high forces and an unusually thick "chip." This anomaly has long been explained, based on ex situ observations, using a model of smooth plastic flow with uniform shear to describe material removal by chip formation. Here we show that this phenomenon is actually the result of a fundamentally different collective deformation mode--sinuo...
